Biography

Originally into Eventing, Kate’s passion for dressage began at an early age and in 1996 she won a place in the final of the national Talent Spotting competition, riding Westwell Jem.

When she was 16 years old Kate and Jem successfully competed at the Junior European Dressage Championships in Belgium and the combination went on to be selected another three times for the Young Rider Championships in Poland, Germany and the UK.  The combination also competed in four further International ‘Euro-futur Cups’ in Europe.  Kate spent several weeks at Henk Van Bergen’s yard in Holland training with several horses.

In 2000 they won the Team Bronze medal and Kate was the Best British Rider in the Team Test. Once she had moved out of Young Riders Kate continued to train Jem and the pair were placed 2nd at the 2003 Summer National Championships in Intermediare II and 10th in the Grand Prix.  She also represented Great Britain at Grand Prix at Hartpury International CDI*** and Hickstead International  CDI***.

Kate’s career has continued to blossom and she is a regular competitor on the national circuit where she has notched up an impressive number of wins on different horses.  Kate was enlisted onto the prestigious World Class Development Squad for two years, training with Frances Verbeet and a further year on the Pathway; training with Ferdi Eilberg.  With World Class’s funding she was able to travel to Holland and  train with Imke Bartles with horses Corbiere and Conquistador. The same year Kate took part in a demonstration at the Horse of the Year Show with Olympian Richard Davision.

She has competed and been placed at Grand Prix level at Frys CDI***, Addington International CDI***, Hartpury International CDI***, Hickstead International CDI***, Small Tour France CDI*** and won Small Tour in Compeigne CDI*** not to mention winning many classes at Premier League shows at Grand Prix, Intermediare II, Intermediare I and Prix St Georges and enjoyed success at the British Dressage Summer and Winter Regional and National Championships.

Having had such a successful time compting with Corbiere; Nationally and Internationally, Kate was ranked No 1 Great Britain’s Top Rider in the UK Rider Rankings (Small Tour) for two years.

Not only does Kate compete at Advanced level, she has recently started to compete in the Young Horse classes. Competing at the Young Horse Championships saw Kate win the Hickstead 6 Year Old National Championship 2012  with Barcelona, who also came 2nd in the International 6 Year Old (to Farouche, 6 year old World Champion).  Barcelona also came 2nd in the Hartpury National Young Horse Championship.  5 Year old Leonie came 3rd in a very big class in the prestigious Badminton Young Horse Championships 2012.

“I love my Patrick Saddles! The horses go so much better in them as they are made to measure with the horses comfort first and foremost.  They look smart, modern and the materials and craftsmanship are top notch. I have total confidence in Patrick’s  ability to fit and make the saddles to an extremely high standard. He will always come out and re-fit the saddles when the horses change shape, especially for the younger ones.  Patrick is tenacious and highly motivated to succeed and I genuinely believe he can fit his saddles to any horse to make the horse comfortable, myself having experienced several very tricky ones with great success through Patrick.”    Kate Cowell
